US spot bitcoin ETFs have swung to net inflows of roughly $320M for 2026 (Bloomberg tally; ~$349M per Askthetape) — the first positive year-to-date print since April — after investors added about $4.6B since Aug 19, erasing a $5.69B deficit accumulated by July 13. BlackRock's IBIT captured ~$1.02B over four sessions as Bitcoin rallied ~35% from ~$64,100 to an eight-month high of $87,265.

The 2026 bitcoin ETF story has flipped. After bleeding a $5.69 billion year-to-date deficit by July 13, US-listed spot bitcoin ETFs have taken in roughly $6.04 billion since that trough — about $4.6 billion of it since Aug 19 alone — pushing the annual tally back into positive territory for the first time since April, according to Bloomberg's count (+$320M) and Askthetape (+$349M).
The pace is what makes it a milestone. Monday's $999 million single-day intake was the largest of 2026 and the strongest since Oct 6, 2025 (Farside data); Tuesday added $715 million, putting the week above $1.7 billion (SoSoValue) and on pace to beat the year's best week (~$1.92B, week ended Aug 21). BlackRock's IBIT alone absorbed roughly $1.02 billion across four sessions (Arkham Intelligence). Bitcoin has climbed ~35% over the same stretch, from roughly $64,100 to a high of $87,265, before easing back to the mid-$84,000s.
The catalyst was macro, not crypto-native: Bloomberg Intelligence's Eric Balchunas traces the acceleration to Aug 19, when Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent signaled increased buybacks of longer-dated government bonds — a duration-friendly shift that lifted risk assets broadly. Crypto total market cap is pressing back toward $3 trillion, and Galaxy research head Alex Thorn called out the April-first milestone on X.
Why it matters: the average cost basis of bitcoin held through US spot ETFs sits near $82,000, so the cohort that spent 2026 underwater is back in unrealized profit. The $80-85K zone now has ETF demand beneath it instead of redemption-sellers above it — with one caveat. CryptoQuant shows short-term holders sent ~47,600 BTC (over $4B at ~$85K) to exchanges as price approached $88,000 — one of the largest profit-taking spikes in the series. Supply is meeting the bid at exactly the level where the new buyer cohort gets whole.
Ondo Finance launched Ondo Intelligent Portfolios, a new onchain product category delivering portfolios built on strategies developed by BlackRock for Ondo as single transferable tokens. Three tokens went live today — High Income, Diversified Growth, High Growth — with smart-contract-level rebalancing, available to eligible investors outside the US.
On Monday, Sept 21, the European Central Bank switched on Pontes, a platform linking distributed-ledger markets to the Eurosystem's TARGET Services so eligible banks and market infra providers can settle tokenized bonds and funds in central-bank money. Christine Lagarde announced the go-live at Friday's Eurogroup, calling it 'a digital euro made available for banks.' It lands three days after the SEC's Innovation Exemption opened onchain trading of tokenized US stocks — the institutional tokenization race is now transatlantic.
On Friday, Sept 18, Kalshi filed a proposed rule change with the SEC and submitted it to the CFTC to list perpetual futures on individual US stocks — hours after Coinbase submitted a near-identical proposal, with Kraken parent Payward joining through its Bitnomial exchange. The CFTC lists the trio's contracts as pending approval; sign-off would bring crypto's most-traded derivative structure to US equities for the first time.
